TEHRAN: The Iranian and Saudi outside priests met on Sunday in New York, with their opponent states united by their resistance to the Islamic State jihadist gather, the Iranian government said.

"This is another page in relations between the two nations," Iran's Mohammad Javad Zarif said, cited on the legislature's site.

"We trust this will have a positive effect on restoring peace and security in the locale and the world, and for the diversions of all Muslim countries," he said after the discussions.

His Saudi partner Prince Saud al-Faisal, alluding to the Islamic State's (IS) invasion in Iraq and Syria, was cited as saying: "We accept we must dodge the blunders of the past to effectively defy the current emergency." Iran and Saudi Arabia are powerful in the locale and regular participation will irrefutably have an impact on restoring peace.

The experience in New York, where the outside pastors were to go to the UN General Assembly, was the first between the top representatives of Saudi Arabia and Iran since Iranian President Hassan Rouhani came to power in August 2013.
